Black and White

I just had my final critique for my two ceramic classes on thursday. I showed about a 1/3 of my work, picking the pieces that showed my progress best. It wasn't until I had everything set out that I noticed how much better my form had gotten. The only problem was.. my glazing SUCKED. I hadn't had much luck making my own glazes and had been fighting with the shop glazes all semester so during the last week i went and glazed everything blue and red on white. This really took away from my forms and after talking with my professors we decided that to cure myself from over decorating, and sometimes ruining nice pottery, that I should focus on two glazes. We decided next term that I will focus on working in black and white.

Although I have been limited. I am super excited about working this way and thought a good way to get some ideas flowin would be to search for black and whites that i find stimulating. These are the sorts of patterns, themes and vibes that I want in my pottery.

It was also a great way to find some new artists and awesome items on etsy

1. Creamer and Sugar Bowl (I might have cheat and add some blue now..) - shoshonasnow
2. Craft Paper Bead Necklace - hippiekingdom
3. Fancy Glass Headpins -Black and White (The glass reminds me of glazes) - tanyamcguire
5. Chickadee Tumbler - kirstenkswanson

I want all of this. Check out these shops, they all have some wicked items for sale. There will probably be some more black and white posting soon. All these crafters are helping me to get stoked on my next glazing project. Thanks!

Im on a role

I found another great artist. This one is an illustrator and ceramicist. Im really attracted to the delicate lines in contrast with the black/white bold graphics. It all reminds me of going to the aquarium while i was in junior high and having to draw the sea urchins and plants in our science note book with a description of each one for some reason. This artist is Diana Fayt and is definitely someone worth following since she seems to be totally rad, and quite talented.

Jon Contino.

Thank you delicious for helping me find such an awesome illustrator.  This is Jon Contino from New York.  He can draw, design and has great hand typography. It's like graffiti and design and ralph steadman all combined! Everyone needs to go browse his website and look at not just his commercial work but also through his sketchbook art that is on the site. He is super talented and can do so many styles. I think i might go practice my lettering now..

here is am illustration from ralph as well.
this is from his gonzo work

christmas cards with spunk

Don't get stuck with boring cards this year. Cute cards of peace and holiday greetings are classic but they  aren't usually too much fun. Turn it up a notch by making your own from patterned patter and collage like I did for my sarcastic klimt "joy" cards or throw in some witty holiday quotes. These cards feel like christmas without being toned down.

1. Unglued - Collage with matching gift tags
2. LittleLadyCompany - Frozen Bum Single Card
3. beautifulbeast - Billy Corgan Holiday Card
4. SimplyInvitingCards - Bah Humbug

Sodalicious

These are some samples form the last soda firing. The first few things are all cone 6 and the tea pot is from when I was working in cone 9.  I love the ones that look nice and toasty. Comments? What do you think about the red/blue combination on the bottle from the first picture?

lots

I've just finished making lots of work in the studio. Glazing is hating on me right now but hopefully tomorrow's kiln load will be a little nicer to me.

jars (sans lids)

A bundle of mugs and the tea pot I have finally decided to glaze after a year of gathering dust. It is put in the soda kiln at cone 9. Results will be in soon!
